New Main Stand

Now that academy is finished. Parish and co can go “hell for leather” for the new stand. Let's look into what it will mean for the club.  Increase in seats in the main stand of 7,873, reduction in Family stand of 594 and filling in the corner of Arthur Wait to add 683 seats. That would put the ground at 34,259. It would make Selhurst Park the 14th biggest club ground in England. Looking through the plans, It looks like the club will really increase its corporate facilities with two floors of the five-floor stand just being for corporate. It looks good for all budgets of hospitality. Watching padded seat on TikTok, I have noticed very different levels of hospitality. Before that, I used to think it was all very high-end. Actually, there are more affordable packages but still expensive.  New landmark I remember in the early days of cpfc2010 they replaced the gates to the stadium car park. Before that, if there was a news story about Palace. The go-to picture was of the tatty main s

Feelings after Fulham

 Feelings after Fulham

As Crystal Palace fans, we've all noticed the team's struggles this season. Whether it's the defense not quite holding up or the attack stalling out, something has been off. In this blog post, we take a closer look at the numbers to try and understand what's been going on. We examine the reliance on Doucouré in defense and the balance issues with the attacking players. Are these the root causes of the team's struggles?

Once again Vieira must ask too much of Doucouré

I like Doucouré and he having a good season but he is not Kante. He is currently the main defense-minded midfielder. The only one that can break up play in the first eleven. He has the most tackles per 90 in the defensive final 3rd for Palace this season (Players over 100 mins). Only Luka is above him on tackles plus interceptions per 90. Last season the load was shared more. McArthur (3.9), Kouyaté (4.1), and Mitchell (4.2) all with high tackles and interceptions per 90. After Kouyaté left, McArthur was injured, and Mitchell's figures are down to 2.5. Part of that might be more respect from the opposition as targeting him less as an inexperienced link. That said other midfielders without the minutes have high numbers Hughes, and Jario but they have only had a few minutes. They have been brought onto the pitch to disrupt tiring teams. It doesn’t take much to boost those numbers if you don’t have the minutes.

Before looking at the numbers I thought that reason Palace wasn’t defending so well was due to Doucouré needing more help to balance the team. But looking at this season's XG and extrapolating it out for a season. Puts the Xg conceded at 52.94, up 6.94 from last season. This isn’t great but last season was Palace’s lowest goals against in a season in the Premier League. More worrying I did the games for Xg scored. This season Palace is on track for 36.48 less than one Xg per game. (Remember a Penalty is 0.7 Xg.) That’s a drop-off of 17.32 Xg over a season.

Problems in Attack

Initially, I thought that issue was trying to get Olise, Wilf, and Eze all starting in the same team. All three are good attacking players but what worries me is the balance. What’s the point of having good attacking players if the Ball is not in the final third? That was a large problem for Fulham match as Palace only had 38 touches of the ball in Fulham’s final third. In the Premier League that is the lowest for a Vieira managed side. That’s more shocking than zero shots on target. If you look at the mix of touches it’s 51% (def 3rd) 41% (mid 3rd) and 7% (att 3rd). For context Palace on average, this season is 38%, 43%, and 20%. Part of this was due to Guéhi not playing, the red cards, and how well Fulham did at stopping Palace from getting the ball into the final 3rd. If we look at other games when all three have started the number of touches in the final 3rd goes up on average. But the points per game are slightly lower at 1.25 vs 1.29.

Back to shots on target. It never feels like the best measure to judge as it wouldn’t make the game more acceptable if a shot from 40 yards was slowly saved by a stationary keeper. In the Forest game Palace had 148 touches in the final third which is above Palace’s average. The Xg was 1.4. Which is joint 2nd best for this season. If we look at last season 26% of games Palace had more than 2 Xg. This season that only happened against Aston Villa. This shows that Palace is not creating the chances. They are getting the touches in the final 3rd; last season the average number of touches in the final third was 10 more per game. That’s a 9% percent drop shouldn’t this affect Xg as much? The Xg is 47% down. I think the way to improve going forwards is to have Eze or Olise on the bench. Give them 30 minutes to attack tired defenses.
